NREM Stage of Sleep

NREM sleep is divided into three stages, known as N1, N2, and N3.

  • N1: This is the first sleep stage that serves as a transition between wakefulness and more profound sleep stages. During the N1 stage, the brain produces theta waves, and the heart rate and body temperature begin to decrease.
  • N2: This is the light sleep stage where the heart rate continues to slow, and body temperature drops further. The brain produces “sleep spindles”, short bursts of rapid activity, essential for memory consolidation.
  • N3: This is the deep sleep or slow-wave sleep stage marked by large, slow delta waves produced by the brain. This is the most restorative stage of sleep, essential for physical recovery, growth, and development.

REM Stage of Sleep

Following the NREM sleep stages, the REM stage begins. This stage is typically associated with intense brain activity, eye movements, increased heart rate, and breathing. The brain waves during this stage resemble the brain’s activity when awake, explaining why most dreaming occurs during the REM stage.

The REM stage of sleep is critical for mood regulation, learning, and memory creation. This stage also triggers protein synthesis at the cellular level, which leads to tissue growth and repair.
